Department of Dietetics in association with IDA (Punjab Chapter) organized the 5th CNE on METABOLIC SYNDROME – A Nutritional Perspective. The chief guest for the occasion was Principal Dr Sandeep Puri. The conference was attended by more than 150 dieticians from different states. Ms. Ruby Saund, Niti Desai and Dr Vishal Marwah from Mumbai enlightened the delegates with latest nutritional advancements in treatment of cluster of diseases.
Dr Sandeep Puri said “it is important to know about the latest advancements in the field of nutrition and dietetics and its significance in keeping the body healthy. He said combination of good nutrition and physical exercise can help you to maintain healthy weight and reduce your risk of chronic diseases and promote good health”. Nutrition is a baseline for our body. It plays a fundamental role in achieving overall health, more than anyone can ever imagine. He further added, “metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that occur together, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes”. With regular health check up, maintaining proper body weight and eating nutritious food can help people to live healthy and active life. In his address, Dr Puri said that Department of Dietitics in DMCH has grown manifold with under the guidance of Secretary Sh Prem Kumar Gupta.
Dean Dr. RAJOO SINGH CHHINA, in his address said that metabolic syndrome is closely linked to overweight, obesity, lack of physical exercise and insulin resistance. He further added we should always look for heart healthy lifestyle changes which include green vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, low fat dairy products etc rather than street foods.
Senior dietitian and Incharge Dietetics Shaveta Batta RD , added “ little modification in lifestyle can help to maintain the healthy body”. She further added “diet plays a very crucial role in preventing metabolic syndrome by lowering down the cholesterol levels, insulin resistance, managing the body weight etc”.
Dr Jaspreet Kaur President IDA Punjab Chapter said that “lifestyle modification includes 30 minutes physical exercise, including plenty of water, vegetables and fruits, protein rich diet, whole grains , limiting saturated fats, avoiding junk food and quit smoking & alcohol”. She concluded the conference by saying “ health is not about the weight you lose but the life you gain.
